The artist has given the complete sum of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which functions to preserve the UK's small live music spots.

The star was given the cheque on mid-October as his new release the album was declared the outstanding release of the past year.

He has decided to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the essential function local spots played in his initial steps.

"I personally couldn't be pursuing my current career if it wasn't for all the gigs I played around the region, and beyond, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These venues are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these venues have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

Recently, well-known musicians like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to support the industry, by including a modest fee to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

Fender also joined in, generating over £100k on his live tour to support 38 local spots across the UK.

These funds helped locations that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues caused by floods, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and neighbor objections.

Other venues obtained funding support in improving infrastructure and technical equipment that positively impacted musicians and concertgoers.

"The notion that money from shows in big venues supports the independent spots, where it all starts for artists like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

Two years ago, the band donated their winnings to the local youth club that nurtured their band, alongside other independent music bodies.

Also 1994 winners the group donated their award to a MS organization after a friend was diagnosed the disease.

"Winning was ample," remarked singer Heather Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our success affected somebody else's life."

Last week, the MVT announced it had rescued two grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

The first in the city and The Croft in the city were purchased under the community ownership initiative, which is supported by Arts Council England and music fans who buy "shares" in the buildings.
