A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in national works. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
